David was born to Lucy (Pugh) and Luther Berton Monroe in Exline Iowa (farmers Appanoose County, Iowa). He had a brother, Kendal and a famous first cousin, Vaughn Monroe the band leader and actor from the 30's.

On page 90 of the History of Exline 1996 there is a class photo of David. He graduated from Exline High School in 1923.

He is listed with picture (age 39 in 1942) on page 221 of the Exline History 1996. Beneath his picture it says, "Tech Sgt. David B. Monroe, 39, Exline, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Monroe, wife Geneva; trained in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, now with Signal Corps in Ireland: former farmer".

Later he moved to St. Louis, Missouri.

On January 21, 1953 a daughter was born to him and Ethel Porter, named Claudia.

He is the grandfather of Michael, Brian and Sean Haslett and the great grandfather of Alexis Haslett.

He died July 5, 1965 of a heart attack / heart disease. He was a moderate smoker.

My memories of him was he was a conservatively well groomed, quiet, gentle and intelligent man with beautiful intense hazel eyes that sparkled every time we met.

He enjoyed having a beer and watching the Perry Como Show on Saturday night.

He was laid to rest at Jefferson Army Barracks, Missouri.

David's mother was named Lucy and she was born to Samuel and Dicindia Pugh. Lucy had a brother named Van who is pictured on page 147 of the Exline History 1996.

Van Pugh was mayor of Exline, Iowa in the late 1920's and was married to Lettie Maring on 12/12/1901.

I believe Lucy and Luther Burton Monroe are buried in Appanoose County, Exline Iowa area.

On page 230 of the History of Exline 1996 it says, " The Monroe cemetery is located one and one fourth miles northwest of Exline, is the first burial ground". Mrs. Beers recalls.

Anyone out there stumbles across Lucy and Luther B. Monroe's grave please let me know. It would be nice to have a picture of them and or their graves.

"To you it may be just another old photo, to someone else it is their heritage".
